About Curaçao
Squares

It is the open spaces in a city's infrastructure where everything happens. While talking about architecture it is natural to first think of actual structures - houses, churches, bridges. But the social importance of town squares cannot be neglected. Sometimes what it is more important what is not there, than what is.

Fortplein

The Fort Amsterdam - seat of the government and location of the first Dutch settlement on Curacao - is centered around a semi-square open area called Fortplein (plein = square in Dutch). While it is now merely used as the parking space for ministers and commissioners it used to be the center of social life in a small community between the walls consisting of tradesmen, military and several ladies of loose morals.

Octagon Square

The small eight-cornered tower at the very end of this square is the tiny Octagon Museum, where the hero of the South-American liberation front, Simon Bolivar, spend several years of his life. The museum is now part of the property of the Avila Hotel and the recently renovated square in front of it is now regularly used as the venue for concerts, parties or other types of events.

Julianaplein

Julianaplein is not one of the most impressive squares, because it is cut right down the middle by a busy traffic way. However, its importants is in its economical value, by being a location surrounded by audit & consultancy firms and law practices. Right arround the corner are the colorful former slave houses of Arrarat that are glued together while going up the hill resembling a stairway.

Brion Square

Brion Square is the only square with a free view on the harbor entrance. The square inadvertently became somewhat bigger in the late sixties, when most of the harbor front buildings were burned down in riots. Nowadays the scene looks much more peaceful with local kids playing in the playground and lovers walking along the water's edge.
