Shopping is great on Curaçao, as it is much more connected to the world than many of its Caribbean sisters, because of its harbor. Besides the shops in Punda, there are many other shopping areas that deserve a visit. A special mention should go to the large Harbor Free Zone, for all your tax free shopping and shipping abroad.

Curaçao Trade History
When the first conquistadores laid eyes on the island of Curaçao they called it 'La Isla Inútil' (the useless island). This not so flattering name was inspired by the fact that the soils were infertile and there was no evidence of gold ore. The 32 Spanish settlers that were living on Curaçao after its discovery were easily chased away by the Dutch, who did see enormous value in Curaçao - in its deep sheltered natural harbor, which has since been a trade center in the Caribbean.
